ANGEL

Budget sculpt of a flighted feline anthro-character, going by the monicker of Angel - you maybe guessed that from the title. Anyway, here's the start of things for this one, which right now doesn't look like much - which is as per the usual run of things of course, a bloke can't expect it to look snappy right off the bat, so I'll obviously be applying a bit of work to things; anyway, managed to scrounge together a fair few useful bits-n-pieces for her, though the pose necessitated quite a bit of chopping about and sanding down of the various limbs; for the head I did a bit of voodoo and affected a shrinky-dink from a mould of an existing moggy - this'll only be the sort of base-shape for it, so I'm gonna be carving it back quite a bit before I actually lay any fur-detail onto it; and then - mmm, wings - s'been a good while since I've done any wing-work, so this'll make a good outing - and they start life from here as nothing more sophisticated than a couple of bits of bent-about cardboard...

- the next bit of progress then - for starters I've yoinked them wings off 'cause they're essentially just in the way of getting on with things - and it's a sight easier to model the feather details onto 'em anyway if they're separate from the rest of the body; which, meanwhile, seems to be getting on with sprouting a bit of form and fur-detail, how's that for apple chutney?

- getting a bit more bodied up with it all -

...and now the head's coming along too - though unfortunately I'm gonna have to lop off her noggin and go back a step or two soon, I got a bit carried away and built her up a bit of a cat-neck instead of a more human-proportioned one, so the saw may well be gettin' busy before too much longer...

- scratch that last comment - turns out the client is actually quite enamoured of the cat-neck-look, so it's staying put.

- meanwhile, the fiddly-feathery bit is coming on slow but sure, I'd forgotten how involved these wingy-things can be!

...a bit more to look at, at long last - seem to have been a busy bugger just lately at 'proper' work so most of these part-time sculpts have ended up right on the old back-burner - but anyway, more progress, finally, as we draw nearer to what's gonna be the last few bits to do on this wingy wonder - busy on the fine details of stuff like hands and feet now, always tricky devils to get looking right...

- and a bit of a look at how she's coming together, and also a peek now the wings are done - I'm gonna get a cast of these things to save me having the pain of making another pair, assuming I ever have to make another pair in the same position... hey, you never know... but anyway, I guess she's otherwise not far off now.

- right, here we have a pair of new wings as cast from the moulds made of the originals - I'll be using these on the model as they're a heck of a lot less weighty, relative both to being glued on, and being posted. You can see there was a bit of extra modelling needed here and there plus the filling of a few pot-holes, but that's all par for the course...

...and here, a quickie of the tail - sculpted from a more flexible compound since I know there's no way such a flimsy structure would survive being put through the mail.

tail

- the same could be said for the unlikely survivability of the wings if I'd attached them permanently to the body - as you can see from the hacked-about state of this poor moggy's back, I had several unsuccessful attempts at making attachments that I thought might be sturdy enough to deal with the rigours of the postal service, but ultimately I realised it would make much more sense to keep them separate, to be glued on by the client upon arrival, so that they could be more safely packaged as individual pieces: thus it took another heck of a lot of faffing about to get a decent-looking join between body and wings that wouldn't require any filling-in work on the part of the recipient - some strong glue should be all that's needed once the sculpt gets to where it's going. Meanwhile, this little critter is finally ready for her first lick of paint, so you can expect to be seeing a bit of colour any time soon...

that looks painful fly me to the moon

- here you go, told ya so...

grey-pes of wrath, haharr grey-diator

...thus begins the laying on of a layer or two, couple of base-colours first to get her rolling; and here's a not-very-exciting quick'un of the blacked-out wingydings, too...

live and let die (get it?)

- and here, after not all that very much longer, the finished paint-up, whaddya reckon?
